Tomorrow Mary turns thirteen.
The cook is going to make a cake and she is to be let off lessons. Other than that she's not really sure what to make of this; despite the cold weather, she's sitting outside by her tree (now bare) in her garden, trying to decide.

Date: 2008-11-01 04:30 am (UTC)Obviously this is all due to Mary's expert coaching.

Date: 2008-11-01 04:36 am (UTC)Galadan's tone is very dry.
"In the spirit of academic curiosity, of course."

Date: 2008-11-01 04:40 am (UTC). . . has she spoken to him more than that?
"- and things have gone more quickly here than they have in Milliways!"

Date: 2008-11-01 04:48 am (UTC)His silence speaks volumes, however.
Volumes in multiple editions, even.

Date: 2008-11-01 05:02 am (UTC)That eyebrow is not going anywhere.
"Your Wellard does not much appear to be the trainable type."

Date: 2008-11-01 05:08 am (UTC)Mary says this with quick vehemence; Mary is the only one who is allowed to insult Mary's friends!
"Only extremely prone to rushing into things without thinking - but that is because he is brave usually, and because he wishes to help and does not think how. He is the one who could use lessons in strategy."
no subject
Date: 2008-11-01 05:10 am (UTC)His voice is dry as the Sahara. In a bad year.
"For I do not believe for a moment that young Master Wellard is the only one to rush in without thinking."
Yes, Mary. He is talking about you.
no subject
Date: 2008-11-01 05:14 am (UTC)"I think! I am very careful. I only rush when there is not time."
no subject
Date: 2008-11-01 05:15 am (UTC)Both eyebrows arch very delicately.
"I do, as you are aware, know whereof I speak."
no subject
Date: 2008-11-01 05:21 am (UTC)"I do not think even you can plan for everything in Milliways. There are too many people coming and going always, and too much magic that surprises you."
no subject
Date: 2008-11-02 04:11 am (UTC)One corner of his mouth twitches upward.
"And there's a great deal to be said for silent observation."

Date: 2008-11-02 04:53 am (UTC)But as it is--
"Perhaps you might begin, Mary. You have, after all, been there far longer than I."
no subject
Date: 2008-11-02 05:10 am (UTC)Still: "I am not talking about what has happened, though," Mary says, frowning. "I am talking of what you could predict. That is what I want to know."
no subject
Date: 2008-11-02 05:13 am (UTC)His look suggests that Mary ought to possess both these abilities.
no subject
Date: 2008-11-02 05:16 am (UTC)"I do not see how you could predict bread dough coming to life to take over the back," she mutters, rather rebelliously. "Things that happen there are hardly rational at all! That is the trouble.

Date: 2008-11-02 05:31 am (UTC)Galadan is so very generous.
"But to expect no infestations from other worlds, or to discount the presence of magical experiments in some of the less-policed regions of the bar and its environs suggests--well. It suggests a lack of foresight."
no subject
Date: 2008-11-02 06:11 am (UTC)Mary is constantly emphatic on this point.
"But you cannot plan in specific unless you know what the specifics will be. The rest is only a - is only general watchfulness."
no subject
Date: 2008-11-07 03:48 am (UTC)The Sahara has nothing on Galadan's voice.
"I hardly assign you your translations based on archaic notions of torture."
no subject
Date: 2008-11-07 03:56 am (UTC)"But I have not encountered anyone in Milliways who wished to conquer Gaul and divide it into three parts."
no subject
Date: 2008-11-07 04:18 am (UTC)Galadan is not laughing.
Really.
No, really.
no subject
Date: 2008-11-07 04:33 am (UTC)"I know what you are trying to say. I do. But I am only saying - I know it is important to know history and to see the patterns and to be careful and watch for things. I know all that. But you cannot see the exact future from knowing the past!"
no subject
Date: 2008-11-07 04:36 am (UTC)His eyes are a cool winter-grey, watchful and waiting.
"There is more certainty in the past. And such information as may be found there is--less prone to inspiring fear. Self-fulfilling prophecies are all well and good, but they are quite difficult to fight."
