Lucy wraps her arms around Mary without another word, pulls her closer and holds her tight and wishes and wishes that it were different.
It's not.
But she can wish.
"You," she says finally and quietly in Mary's ear, "are everything I could ever want in a little girl. That anyone could want. You are brilliant and fierce and believe in things and love with all your heart. And when you didn't understand why I wanted to have a child, I didn't know--I didn't know how to say, but oh, Mary, it's because I love you so very much and I wish I could have a little girl like you. Because just knowing you makes me so very, very proud and filled with love. And if I could--oh, if I could make it different I would. I would. But I can't, and all I can do is love you and pray for you and promise that I'll come if you need me. I will. And I will always and forever love you, Mary Lennox."
