Mary Lennox is fourteen years old, and an orphan. She's grown reasonably tall, and reasonably healthy, though still thin and sharp-featured and in no way pretty (except a little, on the rare occasions when she really smiles.) She has been living at Misselthwaite Manor with her uncle and cousin for nearly five years now; she's still a solemn, rather contrary sort of girl, but she's learned to like things - even love some of them - and that does a good deal for a person.
